Hey, Sabio! I agree that the Bible is not exactly the easiest compilation of literature to understand. However, I disagree with Ken Ham's methodology of interpretation, specifically the projection of a modernistic worldview on a text written in the ANE. Even if I were unaware of the scientific evidence for an old earth and common descent, I still would not believe that we should be looking in an ANE text for answers to scientific questions.

Mark, thanks for the clarification. However, I seem to recall pictures (from Ken's blog) of people lined up at the resource tables following the conferences. I assume those resources were free? I also assume all the resources that will be available at the Christmas celebration will be given away for free. If these assumptions are wrong, my point still stands.

Also, Ken's use of fear to cause people to turn to his "ministry" and not the Bible, which he claims to base his ministry on, was the main point of the post.

I agree that many religious people falsely assume that science (esp. evolutionary biology) is a threat to religion. The point of the quote is that science (properly understood) can't eliminate God as an ultimate cause, so religious people don't need to fret about the discoveries of science.

Good question. The answers to this question would be as different as the individuals giving them. I don't believe there is one uiversal answer to this question. Furthermore, I can't think of any compelling arguments that make it a logical necessity to posit an ultimate cause. However, I believe that, for many, the experiences of life (beauty, love, friendship, et al) provide an experiential reason for belief in the ultimate purposes of God.

Science isn't trying to explain away God. It's the religious people trying to ignore science who pretend that it is.

But if science comes up with "proximate causes" that are sufficient on their own to explain how things happen, why would you go an extra step and posit God working behind the scenes? Yes, it is technically possible -- and science doesn't dispute this -- but it's, well, hardly parsimonious.

There are multiple perspectives regarding eternal destinies within the realm of orthodox Christianity. To be perfectly candid, I'm not 100% sure what the answer is to that question.

I do know that Christianity teaches that morality by itself isn't sufficient to put one in a right relationship with God. So, I *guess* the answer would be that a rejection of God in this life prevents one from enjoying the presence of God as it will be manifested in eternity.

It's important to realize that I don't believe I or any Christian can claim complete understanding regarding how everything will work out in the end.

Yes, I do believe it's possible to believe in kindness, mercy, and forgiveness regardless of one's beliefs about God. I think the argument that atheists can't be moral is absurd and a perversion of the teachings of C.S. Lewis regarding the moral law.
